The Rev Wilbert Awdry wanted his stories to be as realistic as possible so he based his stories on real events and real engines which is why some of the stories are very dark in nature such as Oliver escaping the scrapyard from the Other Railway (British Railways) in “Escape” and Duke saving Falcon from falling to his death in “Bulldog”

Yes there were many scary episodes I’m surprised more people haven’t said that. Thomas and the breakdown train scared me when I was little. I still love Thomas and Friends though.

Scrap is supposed to represent death and how no one wants to think about it and that is will one day happen, but what makes it worse is that instead of letting the trains free or something they have a red glow with fire and sparks and ghostly moans, which closely implies hell without saying it, it makes kids see death as not ceasing to exist but being burned.

In Escape, Oliver was actually trying to escape to Sodor from mainland Britain to avoid being scrapped. Sodor had become a sort of refuge for steam trains in an era when the British railway was scrapping their steam engines to make room for diesels.

Oliver wasn't escaping from being scrapped by Sir Topham Hatt, he was escaping from being scrapped by the British mainland. He was at that faraway part of the Island of Sodor that only diesels go to because that's the part of the island that's closest to the mainland. He was trying to get to Sodor after having fled the mainland. The Island of Sodor is a safe haven for steam engines, which were being scrapped by the British Railway in favor of diesel engines. That's why Oliver asked Douglas if he was a Fat Controller's engine/Sir Topham Hatt's engine, since he knew Sir Topham Hatt could provide him sanctuary and employment.

What's worse about the engines being scrapped is that when an engine is no longer able to live it's living course it's body is recycled and reused. So basically it's when an engine dies. What's darker is that Thomas actually shows desires of wanting to be scrapped too. In Thomas and Friends: The Great Race, Thomas and Ashima sing a song called "You Can Only Be You". While Ashima tries to tell him that he is fine the way he is, at one point Thomas sings "Break me, shake me, Take me all apart, There has to be A better place to start". In Thomas and Friends: Journey Beyond Sodor, Thomas at one point says "No, Theo. I'm not being scrapped. But... (sigh) I probably should be." Poor Thomas.

Quite an interesting video. It was cool seeing one of my favorite channels turn a spin on the subject of "dark" children's episodes, but actually acknowledging the risks that the show took and how it prevailed with that. Most videos about dark TTTE episodes are just clickbaity, bad messes. However, this made a good commentary and respected the source material, aside from the assumptions about The Fat Controller being an evil sociopath, but there's plenty of other comments about that. Great video, Strider, and thanks again for respecting this great show.

Escape, as well the Railway Series stories Escape and Little Western, which serve as the basis for the episode, takes place in 1967. During this time period Steam engines were scrapped and replaced with diesels on British Railways AKA the Other Railway as they call it in the show. Oliver wasn't sent to be scrapped by Sir Topham Hatt, but by Oliver's old Controller in England (commonly known as 'The Mainland' in the show) and was sent to the the scrapyard in Barrow in Furness, the last stop before Sodor.
